The FDA has just approved a new birth control pill, “Beyaz”, which contains a form of Folate. Birth control pills are known to deplete:
- Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
- Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)
- Folate
- Vitamin B12
- Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)
- Zinc
Please see my previous posted article on “Birth Control Pills Can Deplete Vitamins” for further information.
Technically, the new birth control contains levomefolate calcium which is a metabolite of folic acid. Folic acid is important in preventing neural tube defect in developing fetuses during the 1st trimester. Beyaz is essentially the exact same as Yaz- just with the added folate. The intention is to prevent a folic acid deficiency in women of childbearing age who may conceive while on the pill or shortly after discontinuation. This is a nod from the pharmaceutical companies in recognizing the nutrients depleted from taking certain prescription medications. This is also a great revenue source for Big Pharm to capitalize on- add vitamins and minerals back into the prescription medication that cause their depletion. Beyaz may be the right choice for some women. However, supplementing with all the vitamins and minerals depleted by birth control pills is essential for women who chose to take the Pill-whether they plan to conceive or not.
